According to Reuters, the Interfax news agency quoted a Kremlin report of a “foiled attack” on the TurkStream, a significant natural gas pipeline between Russia and Turkey.
Several individuals were detained Thursday during an effort to damage the pipeline that connects Russia to Turkey and Southern Europe, according to the Kremlin. The pipeline, which has a capacity of 31.5 billion cubic meters per year and was launched in early 2020, has a capacity of 31.5 billion cubic meters per year.
“Certain forces … have already made an attempt on TurkStream. The saboteurs have been caught, and several people have been arrested. They wanted to blow it up. On our territory, on soil,” Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said.
Peskov’s remarks come as Russia wants to transform Turkey into a central point for Russian natural gas, which will subsequently be re-exported through Europe. The event was discussed by the spokesman on the sidelines of an international summit in Astana, Kazakhstan.
President Vladimir Putin issued a warning on Monday that Ukraine was attempting to sabotage a portion of the TurkStream pipeline. Last Saturday, a bridge connecting Russia to the annexed Crimean peninsula was bombed. Putin blamed the strike on Ukraine’s intelligence agencies.
“It is obvious that the Ukrainian secret services ordered, organized and carried out the terrorist attack aimed at destroying Russia’s critical civilian infrastructure,” Putin said of the Kerch Bridge bombing.
