Obtaining approval to construct in the San Diego in the first place is a difficult task in and of itself. But that doesn’t appear to be the case if your name is Bill Gates, as he is building a $43 million bachelor pad for himself.
Bill and Melinda Gates reportedly paid $43 million for an oceanfront estate in San Diego, California’s newest hot zone, before announcing their surprise divorce.
But it appears that Gates, 66, is the one who has snatched up the gorgeous residence for his own usage — and he is modifying it to a T, according to local sources.
The original six-bedroom, 3.5-bathroom mansion, which stretched 5,800 square feet, has been entirely dismantled, according to residents, and is being reconstructed from the ground up under the supervision of Microsoft’s billionaire founder.
According to neighbors who are upset about all the interruptions, Gates has supposedly swung by twice in the previous few months with his two bulletproof suburban security entourage to monitor the project.
“It’s been a nuisance,” one neighbor said.
“They make a lot of noise, my baby can’t sleep,” another neighbor explained. “It’s become a real hindrance on the whole neighborhood.”
Obtaining approval to construct in the region in the first place is a difficult task in and of itself. Permits take a long time to acquire and are practically hard to get, according to local authorities. Nothing is truly off bounds if you are Bill Gates, who has a net worth of $134 billion.
Though Gates and his now-estranged ex-wife bought the estate on March 27, 2020, development did not begin until the last three months.
The house was in fantastic shape when real estate images were taken prior to the sale. Nonetheless, Gates felt compelled to demolish the entire structure.
“The home they purchased was in immaculate condition, not exactly sure why he would want to tear it down,” a local realtor told The Post.
Madeleine Pickens, the former wife of Texas tycoon T. Boone Pickens, sold the house to the Gateses. Madeleine Pickens said she wished the new owners well when contacted via phone, according to the Wall Street Journal.
As per sources, Gates intends to use the home, which is situated in the upscale Del Mar district, as his summer bachelor pad.
“When he comes, he checks the house, walks out in the front, inspects it,” one insider said
The present 24-hour security guards who are keeping a watch on the property while it is being built hope that the new house will be finished by August at the earliest. However, photographs show the construction in its early phases, implying that there is still a considerable distance to go.
“They are working around the clock to get it done,” the insider added.
Gates travels into Carlsbad six times per month, per the insider, which is really just a quick drive from his home in Rancho Santa Fe and 30 minutes from the Del Mar estate.
When contacted for comment by the media for comment, a Gates representative denied previous claims of the property acquisition in the Wall Street Journal, Forbes, Business Insider, and other publications, saying that he “does not own this property and has never been there.”
Gates owns properties in Palm Springs and Seattle while he is not in the region.
After 27 years of marriage, Melinda, 57, and Bill Gates declared their divorce in May 2021. In court documents, Melinda asserted that the erstwhile couple’s marriage was “irretrievably broken.” In August, the divorce was completed.
