In a blog post, OpenAI ChatGPT stated it has decided to drop AI voice mimicking Scarlett Johansson due to likeness issues and clarified that the voices in ChatGPT are carefully selected through an extensive process.

ChatGPT Forced To Drop AI Voice Mimicking Scarlett Johansson 1

OpenAI has announced that it will remove a ChatGPT voice similar to Scarlett Johansson, the actress in Hollywood.

When OpenAI unveiled features of its new model, fans noticed the resemblance in the chatbot’s “Sky” voice option, which reads comments aloud to users.

The flirtatious, conversational update to its AI chatbot evoked memories of the actress’s 2013 film Her.

OpenAI stated that “carefully selected through an extensive process spanning five months involving professional voice actors, talent agencies, casting directors, and industry advisors” are the voices that are available in ChatGPT’s voice mode.

The near-future film Her follows Joaquin Phoenix as he develops feelings for the Ms. Johansson-voiced operating system on his phone.

Spike Jonze, the director, stated that the movie was “not about technology or software” but rather about pursuing closeness and love.

According to reports, Ms. Johansson filed a lawsuit in November against an artificial intelligence (AI) program that had improperly utilized her image in an advertisement.

On Monday, OpenAI stated that the “Sky” voice it has created is not meant to be an “imitation” of the celebrity.

In a blog post, it stated, “We believe that AI voices should not deliberately mimic a celebrity’s distinctive voice.”

In a statement on X, formerly Twitter, the company stated that it is “working to pause” the voice to respond to inquiries regarding the selection process.

Despite this, Sam Altman, the CEO of OpenAI, mentioned the movie’s title on X when showcasing the company’s newest model, GPT-4o, on May 13.

“Wow, that’s quite the outfit you’ve got on,” the chatbot said to an OpenAI employee as it demonstrated its more human-like conversational skills.

When complimented, it also remarked, “Stop it, you’re making me blush.”

However, among the memes and posts about ChatGPT that included gifs of Theodore Twombly, the film’s lone protagonist, there were also critical opinions regarding the voice.

One person on X commented, “This is giving such “female character as written by men” vibes.”

“Why is she so obsequious and flirty?”

OpenAI said in a blog post that the five voices its chatbot employed were samples from voice actors with whom it had collaborated.

Having a voice that “feels timeless” and is “approachable” or “charismatic” were two of the qualities it aimed to build the characters.

Before choosing the final voices, the company claimed to have had private conversations with each of the actors on the shortlist regarding their ideas for human interactions with AI and the potential advantages, disadvantages, and limits of the technology.

Users of ChatGPT are not yet able to access the sophisticated voice features that were showcased during its spring update event.

In the upcoming weeks, OpenAI adds, it will be made available to subscribers who pay for priority access to new features and speedier responses.
