The United Nations resolution denouncing settlement operations in “the Occupied Palestinian Territory, including East Jerusalem, and in the occupied Syrian Golan” received support from 145 countries, including India. Thursday, November 9th, saw the approval of the draught resolution.

With a resounding majority, the UN drafted the resolution “Israeli settlements in the Occupied Palestinian Territory, including East Jerusalem, and the occupied Syrian Golan” which was approved. Seven countries abstained from voting, while seven—Hungary, Israel, Marshall Islands, Federated States of Micronesia, Nauru, and the United States—voted against the resolution.

Saket Gokhale, a member of the Trinamool Congress, shared a picture of the resolution’s UN vote and expressed his happiness, saying, “I’m very glad that the Republic of India voted in favor of the resolution.”

“Israel’s occupation of Palestine through settlers is ILLEGAL. Israel’s apartheid must end NOW (sic),” Saket Gokhale said.

Francesca Albanese, from the office of the UN High Commissioner on Human Rights, claimed that Israel doesn’t have the right to self-defense.

India refrained from voting for a draught resolution put forth by Jordan at the UN General Assembly last month, which demanded an urgent humanitarian ceasefire in the Israel-Hamas conflict, because it made no reference to the terrorist organization Hamas. With 120 countries voting in support, 14 voting against, and 45 abstaining, the resolution titled “Protection of civilians and upholding legal and humanitarian obligations” was overwhelmingly adopted.
