Starlink’s global expansion seems to be more extensive than what is depicted on the company’s map. Musk is now claiming that Starlink is now “active” on all seven continents.
Elon Musk stated his satellite-internet system Starlink is “active” on all continents. The Starlink website’s availability map, however, indicates otherwise.
However, the availability map of the low-latency, high-speed satellite internet service only seems “available” in the Americas, Europe, and Australia; Russia, China, and Iran appear to be blocked, with no service in the near future. And not even a trace of development in Africa (despite Musk’s birthplace of South Africa).
Despite the fact that Ukraine is on the “waitlist” with service not yet officially accessible, there have been numerous reports in Western media about how Musk’s space satellites transformed the ground fight against Russia. Perhaps there is more to it than catches the eye, as coverage appears to be more widespread than indicated on the map.
Upwards of 2,300 Starlink satellites are in orbit this month. Another 54 Starlink satellites were launched into space on Sunday night from Florida’s Cape Canaveral Space Force Station using SpaceX’s Falcon 9 reusable rocket.
Last week, Musk tweeted that Starlink “is meant for peaceful use only,” in apparent reaction to Russia’s accusations about Western countries utilizing “elements of civilian, including commercial, infrastructure in outer space for military purposes” at a recent United Nations meeting.
Meanwhile, Musk has stated that he will seek an exception to US sanctions against Iran in order to provide Starlink access to the Middle Eastern country:
Starlink’s global expansion seems to be more extensive than what is depicted on the company’s map. What happens with “peaceful use only” applications remains to be seen.
